Today’s Political Leaders- Walking on Water? The arrogance and egotistical positions of our political leadership has reached new highs across our great nation. Once considered a position of public servantry; now is burdened with the infamous approval rating firmly set around 30%. Moreover, their leadership is validated with more than 50% of Americans convinced our country is heading in the wrong direction. In years past I would give our leadership the benefit of the doubt and even defend their performance on specific issues because I believed they were privy to more information and analysis of the issues through hearings, staff research, etc. Today, I no longer hold that position. Today our leaders are preparing legislation that is incomprehensible, onerous, and subsequently not read by most prior to casting a vote. A piece of legislation can easily reach 500 pages or more with a simple one-page abstract explaining the main purpose or media points of the bill. This is what America sees on the six o’clock news and this is what many legislators reference when casting their vote because adequate time is not available to sufficiently understand every provision. The real bill is buried in compromise, paybacks, and pay forwards. The reality is that most bills are never completely reviewed by our legislators. Their yes vote is often secured with the promise of an addition of a pet project or philosophically motivated amendment to the bill. This is how the bill grows to the monstrous offense that is being fed to the public while their blindfolds are securely fastened. So why do I think our political leadership believe they can walk on water? It is a perverted sense of identity and responsibility in their role. Our founding fathers considered serving in a political capacity as an act of public service. They left there families, farms, businesses, etc. to do their duty for their country. They would finish the work and return home. They were public servants. Today politics is a career. Imagine any other field of work where you raise hundreds of thousands dollars and even millions to win a position in which most are taking a pay cut from their previous career. It is all about power and the accumulation thereof. Most legislators are lofted to rock star status with no accessibility. The general public sends an email or letter to a legislator and receives a beautifully prepared stock answer from a staff person thanking them for their opinion and assures them they are more than a voice in the wilderness. But at least the rock star- excuse me legislator- took time to personally autograph the letter! They simply think they walk on water and they know best. I believe they can walk on water just I believe everyone has the potential to walk on water. Before you start the thought process that I am claiming to be Jesus study your scripture. Jesus walked on water in Matthew 15:25. Read further and you will find Peter, at the encouragement of Jesus, walked on water. Peter was walking on the water towards Jesus until something happened. Peter took his eyes off of Jesus and looked at the world around him. It is at this point he started to sink and Jesus had to reach out to save him. Our political leaders lose the servant’s heart when they take their eyes off Jesus and focus on the world. With so many decisions being made based on polls and not on prayer; America is sinking into a sea of depravity, immorality, and transgression. We are indoctrinating generations of Americans in this worldview through public education. Our leaders rarely serve a God-mandate term in office rather their term is more commonly served until they are caught in moral malfeasance and either resign or quietly slip away by not seeking reelection. It’s is the responsibility of God’s people to demand servant leadership. But before we can make those demands we must first get our eyes on Jesus and seek His guidance. America was founded by servants with eyes on Jesus and the Gospel. Before we ask God to bless America let’s seek Him and ask what can America do to bless Him. ###Pastor John C.
