What if?...
The same influence established our legal system to ensure our laws are grounded in Biblical truth as well as our public education system. A public education system established to assure that every child had the opportunity to know the scriptures. Our government and legal system is based on scripture and without the knowledge of scripture; the youth would be ill-prepared to test the laws against the scripture to assure that government is functioning within the parameters established by the Constitution. So knowing that Christians have virtually abandoned their influence in public policy we must understand the consequences associated with the decision. God gives us a great example in the land of Judah. Judah thrived and enjoyed the blessings of God for over two hundred years. The blessings soon ceased when the curse of national pride, greed, and arrogance took hold of the leadership. The pinnacle of their curse occurred when King Ahaz relinquished the nation’s moral foundation for political gain. God condemned this behavior through the voice of His prophet Isaiah as he equated the leadership and land of Judah to Sodom and Gomorrah. To us this action of God is a fitting story of His just wrath. To the people of Judah it brought back vivid images. It showed God’s correlation of the destruction of a nation with her civil sins. We see in the land of Judah that the failures came from the leaders not the people and the leadership was held accountable for their lack of civil responsibility. So why punish the entire nation just because of arrogant, greedy leadership? Why not just destroy the leadership and start over with new leaders? The answer to those questions lies in the fact that God gave us the people the voice in choosing our leadership. If we have the voice then we must accept the associative responsibility. It is because we share in the responsibility of choosing our leaders that we accept the consequences of the failed leadership in our nation. I believe it is a responsibility that many Americans have taken for granted just as the people in Judah took for granted. America has experience the abundant blessings of God for years. Unfortunately we are seeing the effects of a leadership smitten with pride, greed, and arrogance. It is evident at all levels with our Federal leaders showing a disdain for the American people with policies and laws that are contrary to the will of the people. Corruption is rampart throughout the system and politics has now become a quest for personal destruction rather than a healthy, constructive exchange of views and ideas. The similarities between America and Judah are haunting and surreal. While differences do exist, the ownership of responsibility remains the same. As Americans we must accept the responsibility of the choices we have made and more importantly, hold those choices accountable. Our voice is our vote. As we start the election cycle of 2010 all secular eyes will be focused on the church. Will the church cower in the safety of church pews behind a theology of sugar-coated Christianity? Will the church be silenced through the spirit of fear of retribution by a tyrannical government destined to suppress the voice of God’s people? Or will the church once again rise up and fulfill the commission set forth by our Creator and restore the moral foundation that America was blessed to be laid upon. The decision rests in our hands.ALS Reading Room
